Over Four Thousand Parents Join the Parent Revolution

Mark Twain Middle School and Garfield High School Are at the Top of the Reform List

Hundreds of parents throughout Los Angeles held a press conference today at Gertz-Ressler High School to mark the official launch of The Parent Revolution. The Parent Revolution, a campaign designed by parents to give parents real power over their child’s education has attracted over four thousand parents from across Los Angeles, including Venice Beach, Bel-Air, the Valley and East L.A. to transform Los Angeles’s failing schools. Parents were joined today by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Sandra Tsing Loh, representatives from The Alliance for College Ready Public Schools, Richard Merkin Middle School, Green Dot Public Schools and radio host Fernando Espuelas.

The Parent Revolution was created to give parents a voice when it comes to their child’s education. By joining the revolution, parents will take back their power and stand up to the bureaucrats and status quo. In order to transform failing schools, parents need to join together and share one simple message: If you are not satisfied with your local school, organize 51% of parents in your school to sign a petition and the Los Angeles Parent’s Union will guarantee them a great school within three years.

“The Revolution isn’t tinkering around the edges. The Revolution means a total transformation of how our schools operate rooted in three common sense principles: more parent choice, more accountability and a whole lot less bureaucracy,” said Ben Austin, Executive Director of the Los Angeles Parents Union, who is a key organizer of the Revolution. “We can’t freeze dry our children. We need change now, and parents are fed up! The Revolution is a means for parents to take back their power and to fight the status quo.”

The Parent Revolution will be working with high quality charter school operators such as Green Dot Public Schools, Alliance for College-Ready Public Education, PUC and Bright Star Schools to make this guarantee a reality. If the district fails to improve failing schools throughout Los Angeles, then parents will turn to this coalition of charters school organizations and invite them to open charters in their neighborhoods, thereby essentially stealing students away from the LAUSD.

“We know how to educate our kids. There are models all over the city that work. So what’s the problem? If we can send a man to the moon, why can’t we educate our kids?” asked Fernando Espuelas, radio host of CafŽ Espuelas on 1020AM.

Today’s press conference united several parent groups from across the city, including the Lemonade Moms from the San Fernando Valley, The Burning Mom’s headed by comedienne and parent activist Sandra Tsing Loh and The Los Angeles Parents Union. For the first time, parents will collectively have the power to take back our schools from the special interest groups and the bureaucrats.

“This is an issue that unites all parents. We’re the only group without a conflicting agenda,” said lead parent organizer, Shirley Ford. “LAUSD needs to start making decisions through the lens of what’s good for our kids. Not what’s good for special interest groups, the school board or the teachers unions.”
