Taking Our Hallelujah to the Streets!

Open Door Skid Row Ministry and Feeding, a sidewalk church-without-walls operating at 5th St. and San Pedro Blvd., recently celebrated its 2nd year anniversary.

According to founder Geraldine Hughes, ìI believe in the great commission of God to ìgo ye therefore.î  This ministry has been blessing the homeless men, women and veterans that have lived on skid row for the past two years.î

Services begin at 7:30 pm every Friday with praise and worship followed by a sermon and altar call.  Included are coffee and muffins during the worship and at the end, a hot, home-cooked meal is served.

ìAfter setting up the chairs on the sidewalk, the homeless community comes from near and far.  The advantage of sidewalk ministry is that we catch uncaught fish,î explained Hughes adding that more than 1,500 people have accepted Christ.

ìSometimes we catch them by surprise, just passing through, when they hear the praise ringing forth, or the smell of succulent food heating on our tables. Taking our hallelujah to the street proves successful and is the most loved outreach program in the Skidrow community.î

Hughes received her Urban Ministry training at Church On The Way in Van Nuys where she participated in their Homeless Feeding and Ministry for five years.  She also attended Kings College and majored in Urban Evangelism.  In 1999, she traveled to Bulgaria on a evangelism and medical mission and her desire to be a full-time evangelist grew.

When Hughes first started Open Door Ministry, she worked a full-time job and used her funds to feed the homeless seven nights a week. ìBut God called me off my job 18 months ago and I have not missed feeding approximately 100 people a night,î she said.

Now that winter is here, Hughes is seeking donations of blankets, coats, sleeping bags, tents, clothing and socks as well as funds to replace the ministry van.  To assist or volunteer, call (661) 208-2017 or email:
