The excitement is stirring as the New Mount Calvary Church family prepares to receive Rev. Mark Whitlock, pastor of Christ Our Redeemer (COR) A.M.E. Church in Irvine, on Sunday, September 25, at the 10:45 a.m. worship service.

“As a personal friend and mentor through the USC Passing the Mantle Clergy and Lay Leadership Institute, I could think of no better person to conclude our dynamic sermon series, ‘The Church on Mission for God,'” said Pastor Sonja Dawson.

“And it is so, that the members of New Mount Calvary stand ready to receive all that God has in store through his servant, Rev. Mark Whitlock, and invite the community at-large to join us for this blessed occasion,” she added.

A laborer in the vineyard for over 25 years and one who has truly committed himself to serving God and the Church, Rev. Whitlock has reshaped the Church’s role in community and civic engagement.

Under the legendary leadership of Dr. Cecil “Chip” Murray, Rev. Whitlock founded and served as Executive Director of FAME Renaissance, the community and economic development corporation of First A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles. In this capacity, Rev. Whitlock oversaw the development and receipt of funding of over $400 million in grants, loans, and contracted service initiatives that created over four thousand jobs in South Los Angeles.

In addition, the FAME Renaissance Venture Capital Fund and Commercial Loan programs funded over 200 small businesses and FAME Renaissance’s Home Loan Program created over 200 new home owners and trained over 2,000 home loan candidates.

Presently, Rev. Whitlock serves as Executive Director of the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement at the University of Southern California (USC) Center for Religion and Civic Culture as well as Director of Corporate Giving for the Connectional African Methodist Episcopal Church and Chief Executive Officer of Nehemiah Ministries, an economic development corporation for the Fifth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church.

As pastor, Rev. Whitlock provides spiritual guidance and leadership to over 3,000 congregants on three campuses spread throughout Orange County.

“Indeed, as a visionary, scholar, writer, philanthropist, organizer, and builder, Rev. Whitlock is a true testament to what God can do if you wholeheartedly trust Him. And through the mentorship of Dr. R.A. Williams at Pacoima Baptist Church where his ministerial journey began, Dr. Cecil ‘Chip’ Murray, Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson and others, this highly gifted man of God has invited change into the lives of men, women, boys, and girls from all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds by making the Word become flesh,” said Pastor Dawson.

New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church is located at 402 East El Segundo Boulevard in Los Angeles. For information, including service times and directions, call (310) 324-0644 or email
