Pastor Sonja R. Dawson and New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church (NMC) celebrated the grand opening of the Dr. Lonnie Dawson Home for Children in Gonaives, Haiti on April 28.
Currently in its last phase of development, the Home for Children provides bedrooms, classrooms, kitchen area, and food pantry to support the spiritual, physical, and social needs of its incoming residents.
“Indeed, we are excited for what the Lord has done and it is marvelous in our sight. This journey has been filled with great pleasures and pains, but we have pressed and persevered,” said Pastor Dawson, who led the NMC congregation in 2011 in partnering with the Rev. Dr. Carol and Sister Lillie Broadfoot, Pastor Robert Compere, and the Love and Light Missions to build a home for 17 orphan children.
The facility was named in honor of the late Rev. Dr. Dawson, founder of New Mount Calvary. During his tenure as pastor, he traveled extensively on missionary journeys to West Africa, Jerusalem, Jamaica, Seoul, Korea, Germany and Haiti.
Dr. Dawson also led the congregation to build three wells and sponsor a road restoration project in Haiti following a devastating hurricane in 2004.
“The Dr. Lonnie Dawson Home for Children is a celebration of his work in meeting the needs of this present age, both locally and internationally,” noted Pastor Dawson.
“Now, in continual fulfillment of our church?s mission ?to reach persons beyond the walls,? we will carry on his rich legacy while chartering a new course with the development and building of this home.”
Acknowledging the support of others, Pastor Dawson observed, “Truly, a work of this magnitude could not be accomplished without the favor of God, the prayers of the righteous, and the gracious support of many collaborating partners in ministry.”
Contributors included Holy Chapel Baptist Church in Compton, Atherton Baptist Church in Inglewood, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, West Angeles Church of God in Christ, Macedonia Baptist Church, Family of Faith of Los Angeles, Friendship Baptist Church in Vallejo, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Redwood City, and Exceptional Women of God Ministries in Vallejo.
“As we continue to change the ending in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ, the New Mount Calvary Church family solicits your prayers and support,” added Pastor Dawson.
