Newly appointed Bishop Bobby R. Best convened the 29th Session of the Southern California Region of the Ninth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday, August 6. It continues through Saturday, August 9.
Pastor Bernard Jackson and the members of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church, located at 971 East 43rd Street in Los Angeles, are hosting the conference.
The co-hosts are the Rev. Julio Andujo, presiding elder of the Los Angeles District and pastor of Hays Tabernacle C.M.E. and the Rev. John D. Johnson, presiding elder of the Los Angeles/San Diego District and pastor of Calvary C.M.E. in Pasadena.
On Wednesday, Bishop Best began the business sessions at 3 p.m., and the Holy Communion Worship Service at 7 p.m. The preacher was Pastor Wendell M. Oldham, Jr., of Lewis Metropolitan C.M.E. Following the worship, a welcome reception was held for Bishop and Lady Best in the fellowship hall.
Thursday’s agenda includes preaching by the Rev. Marilyn Batchelor at 9 a.m., the business session at 9:30 a.m., and the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Pastor Willie McDaniel of Curry Temple C.M.E. will bring the message. Training sessions, led by Terri Dyer of Phillips Temple and Pastor Oldham, are set for the afternoon.
At 7 p.m., the Missionary March and Worship Service takes place. Pastor Johnson will deliver the sermon.
Friday’s activities start with a training session at 8 a.m., led by Dr. Joseph C. Neal, Jr., district budget director. The 9 a.m. devotion speaker is Pastor Gaina Flores of Edwards Chapel C.M.E. in El Centro. In addition to business sessions throughout the day, the Ordination Service will be held at 11 a.m., with preaching by Pastor Andujo. The Lay/Ministry to Men Worship Service takes place at 7 p.m.
Highlighting Saturday’s schedule is devotion at 9 a.m., with the message by Pastor Michael Wade of St. Paul C.M.E. in Bakersfield. The Commissioning Service begins at 11:15 a.m., and includes the reading of pastoral appointments.
