
Eight L.A.-area women and four college students were recently recognized at the Carrie Ayers Haynes Scholarship Luncheon and Hall of Fame Celebration on April 19.
The gala event, held at the Carson Community Center, was hosted by the South Central L.A. Branch of the National Association of University Women. More than 200 people came out for to salute the honorees on their outstanding achievements.
Highlighting the program was the presentation of scholarships. The recipients were Jeremy Jeter, a junior at Morehouse College; Amara Ceriah McDuffie, a freshman at Emerson College; Amina Raphael, a freshman at the University of Washington; and Logan Stephenson, a freshman at Prairie View A&M University.
NAUW Branch President Lena Blakeney described the women inducted into the Hall of Fame as “ones who don’t wait for change; you create it.”

Blakely noted, “You see a need and step forward, not for recognition, but because you believe in making a difference. With deep gratitude and admiration, we celebrate you!”
Christiana Worthams, program chair, described the honorees as “community leaders who are quietly working as they make meaningful contributions to our youth, our families and to our communities.”
The Hall of Fame inductees were Dr. Delores Alleyne, Dr. Edna Bereal, Billie Green, Stephany Morris-Nelson, Shirley Patterson, Latonya J. Southall, Janat Tuggle, and Dr. Andrea Young.
Program participants included Valerie Rodgers-Owens, Minister Dani Lyles, Patty Perkins, Gwendolyn White, Erika Lampkin, Jennifer Walker. Entertainment was provided by Rose Rochelle and Rose King.
