The 6th Annual Dymally International Jazz & Arts Festival transformed the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson into a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and community on April 26.  

Hosted by the Mervyn M. Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), the festival drew thousands of attendees for a day of soulful performances and cultural enrichment.

Headlining the event was Grammy Award-winning artist PJ Morton, whose electrifying performance set the tone for an unforgettable day. Joining him were renowned artists such as Will Downing, Tito Puente Jr., Maysa, Nedra Wheeler, Everett Harp, Jeff Lorber, and Paul Jackson Jr., each bringing their unique flair to the stage. The festival also featured the dynamic ensemble Jazz Funk Soul, captivating audiences with their fusion of jazz, funk, and soul.

Beyond the music, the festival showcased a curated Visual Artist Pavilion, highlighting the works of Black artists, art dealers, and galleries. Attendees explored original paintings, limited edition prints, home décor, and unique gifts, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of African American artistry. 

The festival serves as a significant fundraiser, supporting programs like the Dymally Fellows Program, the Sisters United Mentoring and Leadership Program, and theCSUDH Presidential Scholars. These initiatives aim to develop the next generation of political and community leaders who will advocate for systematic change to combat inequality.

Kim Benoit, president and CEO of Rainbow Promotions, co-producer of the festival, reflected on the event’s impact.  

“With a history that spans more than three decades and with hundreds of events under our belt, our team takes pride in coordinating a festival with so much purpose. Through our incredibly talented artists, we are creating music and impacting lives,” said Benoit.  

The festival’s alignment with International Jazz Day underscores its commitment to global cultural exchange. Since 2019, the Dymally International Jazz & Arts Festival has honored the legacy of the late Mervyn Dymally, an internationalist who traveled to over 60 countries promoting cultural exchange.  

As the sun set over Carson, the melodies lingered, leaving attendees with memories of a day where music bridged communities and inspired future leaders. The Dymally International Jazz & Arts Festival continues to be a beacon of cultural celebration and educational advancement, resonating with audiences long after the final note.
