Sharon Ross is a single mother of one of the Southland rising basketball stars, but sports and came is secondary in the life of Ross and her son Keion Bell.
As members of Glory Christian fellowship, Ross and Bell have always relied heavily on their unconditional faith in their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
“God is the foundation from which I draw all of my strength to raise my son in a very complicated world,” said Ross.
She remembers with Bell was born, a 23 inch long infant and she though back then he would someday be a tall boy.
However, she didn’t dream that her son, now 6’3 and star basketball player at Pepperdine University in Malibu would become one of the elite players in the region.
“We’re just blessed and all I ever really wanted was for my son to earn his degree from a prestigious college,” she said.
Bell is only a sophomore at Pepperdine, but after averaging more than 30 points per game in the prestigious ‘Say No’ college summer league is consider among the top players in the collegiate ranks.
“My focus has been on my faith in Jesus Christ and the strength that I consistently obtain from him and next to God and my mother, basketball is second in my life right now,” said Bell.
Ross credits their Christian background with keeping her son humble. He was recruited by Miami, USC and many other prominent colleges before deciding the attend Pepperdine.
Bell’s father was incarcerated at a very early age in his life and is serving a life sentence in prison, yet another obstacle that both he and his mother had overcome.
“It hasn’t been easy doing it alone, but nothing in life worth having is easy. I love my son so much, but it is my faith that has kept him and me together as one and doing what is necessary to make sure that he obtains an education.
Each and every Sunday Ross and Bell go to Glory Christian fellowship to get their spiritual nourishing and throughout they week their constant prayer and bible refreshing maintains their relationship with God.
It is a formula that has not failed them and one that will be a recipe for success for the rest of their lives.
