Metro held a sneak peek of the soon-to-be fully running “K” Line for the media, Metro board members, elected officials and stakeholders on Monday, August 22.
The K Line will serve the communities of West Adams, Jefferson Park, Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, Hyde Park, Inglewood, Westchester, and more. Seven K Line stations will open in Fall 2022. The Aviation/Century Station is projected to open in 2023 while LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is scheduled to open in 2024.
Trains haven’t run along the Crenshaw and Inglewood corridor since the 1950s, but soon trains will travel the route again. According to Metro staff, the opening date for the K line services will be announced soon.
The L.A. Sentinel was able to speak with County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, who was present for the pre-opening K Line ride.
Sharing her thoughts about the ride, County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell said, “As a Leimert Park girl who regularly rode the RTD to the Crenshaw Mall, I am deeply moved to be part of this historic moment.
“When the Crenshaw/K line opens this Fall, we will welcome riders not just to a major milestone project, but also to a new kind of Metro system with Transit Ambassadors arriving in just over a month to ensure that the line itself serves our communities needs in every way,” she noted.
Another rider shared, “This line was originally supposed to open in 2028, but the community couldn’t wait that long, and look where we are today.
“This is the first time we have had a small business interruption fund. The small business interruption fund was established to help the small businesses that were hurt or impacted by the rail expansion project. There were a lot of important firsts that happened here today, so this is a very proud day.”
Metro Employee Errol Taylor said, “I think that it is great! Great for the community and it’s going to make a big difference. Being able to eventually gain access to the airport will be a game changer. This is really a big deal.”
