In the past two years, Mayor's Community and Faith-based Construction Initiative has made inroads in construction industry for African-American workers

Addressing more than 100 pastors, community leaders and faith-based organizations, Mayor Villaraigosa announced at the two-year progress report for his Community and Faith-based Construction Initiative that the program has placed more than 1,300 African-Americans into jobs in the construction industry.

The announcement was made this past Wednesday (January 14th) at the UAW-Southeast LA Crenshaw WorkSource Center, 3965 S. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90037.

An estimated 25,000 jobs in the Building Trades will open up in the next 10 years as a generation of skilled workers hits retirement age. To remedy this impending labor shortage, the City of Los Angeles is in the midst of a major effort to recruit more workers.

The Mayor's Office and City have partnered with local churches and the Building and Construction Trades around the Community and Faith-Based Construction Initiative to recruit more African-Americans and South Los Angeles residents into the sector.

Over the past two years this dynamic partnership has brought 1,345 African Americans from Los Angeles into this high-paying career path. Through the Community Development Department, the City has committed over $1 million in grant funds to build on this effort.
