Parents and friends watch as referee and coordinator D. Jones of Academy of Martial Arts calls out a point in the teen grappling match at the ‘Martial Arts Championship’ held in the court yard behind the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center on Sunday April 20.

Two Students spar as Grandmaster Soke Robert E. Murphy Sr. of Compton T’e Do Karate calls the score.

Shenika Wilson (in braids) grapples an older, stronger, male opponent. Although Wilson lost the match, she fought with bravery and honor that moved the crowd and earned her a trophy.

Proceeds from the event were donated to Grandmaster ‘Big John’ Robertson. For more information on martial arts schools in Leimert, please call (323) 251-7555
