Lula Washington Dance Theatre (LWDT) presents its annual Kwanzaa celebration dance concerts Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 & 28 at 8 pm; and Sunday, Dec. 29 @ 3 pm. The performances will take place at the LWDT studio, 3773 Crenshaw Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90016.
Dance blogger Tonya Plank described Lula Washington’s annual Kwanzaa concert as “One of the most enjoyable dance performances I’ve seen thus far in L.A. The evening was just a pure and simple celebration of movement, of being human. So perfect for the holidays.”
Debra Levine, a dance critic, agreed: “Point me to a better show. I’m open minded! But now in my third year of attendance, I find the year-end Kwanzaa Celebration at Lula Washington Dance Theatre not just exhilarating fun, not only pulling you to the edge of your chair with non-stop great dancing, but, an added pleasure, it blasts off to a double-row barrage of ballistic, live African drumming.”
The three-day celebration features students and dancers from the LWDT Company and School, with a bevy of top flight singers and African drummers including Malik Sow from Senegal; and Leon and Jah Amen Mobley, pioneers in local African drumming circles.
Each evening will be slightly different – with guest musical artists and poets adding to the dance performances. To purchase tickets call LWDT at: 323-292-5852 or contact via email at: [email protected]. General admission tickets are $25. Students and Seniors are $20; and children under 12 can sit on mats for $10 each.
Lula Washington Dance Theatre is an international touring dance company and also a school of dance in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles.
