The Resurrection Weekend Celebration begins with Good Friday Services on April 22 at the Love Peace and Happiness Family Christian Fellowship Church, announced Bishop Leon and Dr. Jacqueline Martin, pastor and first lady.

“We extend a special invitation to the community at large to attend at 11 a.m., at our new Los Angeles church location at 4951 South Figueroa Street, and at 7 p.m., at our Downey location at 11022 Old River School Road,” said Bishop Martin.

“These services will feature the outstanding ministers of the gospel of both churches preaching ‘The Seven Last Sayings of Christ.’ This will be a time of praise and worship along with the participation of various musical renditions to highlight this occasion,” he said.

The celebration continues on Easter Sunday, April 24, at 8:30 a.m., and 10 a.m, at the Downey location, and at 11:15 a.m., at the Los Angeles church.

Explaining the significance of the religious holidays, Bishop Martin said, “Good Friday, also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday or God’s Friday, is the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is the most solemn day on the Christian calendar, falling on the last Friday before Easter Sunday.

“Good Friday is the pinnacle of the Holy Week which is the week of the observance of Passover. All Christians observe this day with great humility and reverence. As early as the first century, the church set aside every Good Friday as a special day of prayer and fasting,” he said.

“However, it was not until the fourth century that the church began observing the Friday before Easter as the day associated with the crucifixion of Christ. Good Friday was originally called ‘God’s Friday.’ Later, the word ‘good’ was used to replace the word ‘God’ which was often viewed as too holy to be spoken aloud.”

Bishop Martin also noted that the word Easter only occurs once in the Bible in Acts 12:4. “The term ‘Easter’ literally means ‘passover.’ The origin of Easter is associated with the observance of the Jewish Passover. Easter is the recognition of Jesus Christ as the true Messiah promised in the Old Testament, who was crucified, buried, and rose from the dead on the third day according to the Word of God.”
