Green Dot Public Schools announces graduation of 4 Locke High Schools on June 22 and 23: Animo Locke Tech, Animo Watts, Animo Locke 4 and Locke Launch to College Academies, including the first class of Locke students to have entered the school after it became a Green Dot High School.
Locke High School now prepares to graduate 484 students, an 85% increase over the figure from 2007-2008, the last year that Locke was under LAUSD jurisdiction. The number of A-G graduates has increased by over 300%, from 85 total at Locke prior to Green Dot, to 264 from the 4 of 7 schools graduating seniors this year. Animo Locke 4 and Locke Launch to College Academies will see the graduation of the last classes that attended the school while it was run by LAUSD.
“As we continue on the path of Retention, Rigor, and Results at Locke High School, we are proud to graduate a senior class that is substantially increased in number over the final year under LAUSD,” says Green Dot President and CEO Marco Petruzzi. “Not only have the numbers increased, 54.5% of this year’s graduates have completed the challenging college prep A-G curriculum, and this is all while retaining more students and increasing proficiency. We are extremely proud of this year’s class, and look forward to even more improvement.”
Living up to their graduation theme of “Legacy and Leadership,” Animo Locke Tech has 85 students graduating out of a class of 102, including 52 original students from the first Green Dot 9th grade class in 2007.
Principal Blain Watson and Green Dot Board Member Brad Rosenberg will speak. Animo Watts has 99 students out of a class of 104 graduating in the class of 2011. 61 students have been at Animo Watts since 9th grade.
Locke Launch to College Academies (LCA) will graduate the final class of original 10th graders that Green Dot inherited when Locke was transferred in 2008. Of the 340 students who were at LCA this year, 306 will walk at the graduation ceremony. The honorable Richard Vladovic, LAUSD Board Vice President, will attend.
Animo Locke 4 is a ‘multiple pathways to college’ academy, where over age, credit deficient or struggling students, as well as those returning from Juvenile detention and others can get the necessary credits to graduate and get accepted to college. In the 2010-2011 school year Locke 4 has a total of 41 students eligible to walk at graduation.
Graduation details are as follows:
• Animo Locke Tech at Main Locke Campus Quad, Wednesday June 22, 2:00pm
• Animo Watts at Main Locke Campus Quad, Wednesday June 22, 6:00pm
• Animo Locke 4 and Locke Launch to College Academies at Locke Football Field, Thursday June 23, 4:30pm
Green Dot attributes its successful turnaround at Locke to several key factors, including reorganizing the school into a family of seven small schools, bringing in new teachers and principals to ensure alignment with the educational philosophy, creating a clean, inviting and safe campus, increasing interventions, and creating an integrated alternative education program. Each of the schools in the Locke cluster are autonomous, supported by Green Dot’s efficient back office, and all of the teachers are members of the Asociación de Maestros Unidos, a CTA/NEA affiliate and the exclusive collective bargaining unit of Green Dot teachers in Los Angeles.
Green Dot was granted control of Locke High School in the 2008-2009 school year, when over 50% of Locke’s tenured teachers signed a petition to turn over governance of Locke High School to Green Dot Public Schools. This historic decision marked the first time that teachers, supported by an external school operator, forced the restructuring of a traditional public school.
Green Dot currently operates 19 schools in Los Angeles, CA and one in the Bronx, NY.
Green Dot Public Schools is the leading public school operator in Los Angeles and is dedicated to changing public education in Los Angeles so that all children receive the educations they need to reach their dreams.
It currently operates nineteen public charter high schools in Los Angeles’ highest-need communities and one in New York. Each Green Dot school (branded “Ánimo” schools) vastly outperforms comparable traditional public high schools. For more information visit: www.greendot.org.
