Cheers and applause filled the air as Pastor Terry L. Brown Sr., elected officials and the Liberty Baptist congregation dedicated Dr. Earl C. Cotton Square and unveiled a monument in his honor.

The celebration took place July 3 at the Founder’s Day Celebration honoring Dr. Cotton who established Liberty in 1957. During his long ministry, Dr. Cotton was highly regarded for his powerful preaching, neighborhood involvement, and civic activities on behalf of African Americans.

“It is with great honor and humility that we celebrate our Christ for His favor upon our church family for these 54 years. We also recognize, along with the entire city of Los Angeles, the vision of Dr. Earl C. Cotton in organizing, pastoring and serving his family, church and community,” said Pastor Brown.

Joining in the special service were State Senator Curren Price, Councilman Bernard Parks, First Lady Karen Brown and First Lady Emeritus Mary Cotton. Program participants included Deacon Rudolph Biddle, Sister Annis Burgos, Sister Dessie Kelly, Sister Clara Sparks, Sister Patricia Powell, and the Brown/Cotton Choir. Billye Turner and Jean Williams provided the music.

Sister Kelly served as chairlady and Sister Sparks as co-chairlady of the Founder’s Day committee. The members were Deacon Biddle, Sister Powell, Lady Cotton, Sister Lucille Hooper, Sister Janice Mills, Sister Lois Pruitt and Sister Harriett Richards.

Liberty Baptist Church is located at 1500 West 51st Place in Los Angeles. Sunday worship is held at 10 a.m., and The Cross Culture service starts at 12:30 p.m. For information, call (323) 295-3866 or email
