Lewis Metropolitan C. M. E. Church will mark 65 years during the Church Anniversary Service on Sunday, January 22, in its sanctuary at 4900 South Western Avenue in Los Angeles.

Presiding Elder Wendell M. Oldham, pastor of Lewis Metropolitan, will kick-off the celebration at the 10:30 a.m. worship and the Rev. Dr. C. Dennis Williams of Brookins Community A. M. E. Church will preach at 3:30 p.m.

“We invite members, former members, and the entire surrounding community to join in this gala event and make this a real homecoming occasion. Our theme is ‘Sixty-five Years of Service – Reclaiming and Moving Ahead’ taken from Philippians 3:13,” said Milton Smith, Anniversary chair

“Over the last 65 years God has blessed Lewis Metropolitan C. M. E. Church with dynamic and awesome pastors, many dedicated officers and members who have labored tirelessly to secure a witness for God on the corner of 49th and Western Avenue. Please plan to join us in celebrating,” added Emily M. Jones, Anniversary co-chair.

Choirs from both churches will provide the music for the celebratory event. Also, a light lunch will be served from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the C. E. Mitchell Fellowship Hall.

Dr. Williams accepted his call to the ministry 35 years ago. During his 26 years of pastoral assignments, he has served at Walker Chapel A.M.E. Church in Seattle, WA; St. John A.M.E. Church in St. Louis, MO; Bethel Memorial A.M.E. Church in San Diego; and Ward A.M.E. Church in Los Angeles. He was appointed pastor of Brookins in 2010.

Highly regarded for his teaching abilities, Dr. Williams was previously an adjunct professor at both Bethel Theological Seminary in San Diego, and the Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies at the University of La Verne in Los Angeles.

Currently, he serves in adjunct professor positions at San Francisco Theological Seminary, Pasadena Campus; and United Theological Seminary in Dayton Ohio as well as mentor for the Doctor of Ministry program in preaching.

Dr. Williams earned a bachelor’s degree from Paul Quinn College in Dallas, TX; a master’s degree Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, AL; and a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH.

He is the author of ‘HIV/AIDS in the Black Church’ and recently completed the book, ‘Pastoring in Scandalous Pasture.’
