The Brotherhood Crusade and the African American Unity Center is partnering with the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation to host the Fourth Annual Jim Cleamons Books and Basketball Camp the week of August 11-15, 2008. This intrinsically novel five-day sports experience engages 9-15 year old youth in math and science, financial literacy, social and personal life skills development, health and nutrition, and of course, basketball fundamentals. This year’s camp will conducted from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, at the EXPO Center, located at 3980 Menlo Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90037.
Among its unique features, the camp exposes youth to a cadre of great role models each year. This year is no exception. The camp’s coaches include Hall of Famer Sam Jones, and basketball legends Phil Chenier, Len “Truck” Robinson, Craig Hodges, Ricky Sobers, Louie Nelson, Larry Wright, Eric Money, Aaron James, and camp co-founder ABA/NBA legend James Jones. An impressive list of guest speakers is presented as well, including Councilman Bernard Parks, State Senator Mark Ridley Thomas, Assemblyman Mike Davis, The Honorable Rod Wright, David Jones, Business Solution Executive, Asia Powell, Strategic Programs for Verizon, actor William Allen Young (Moesha), and Danny Bakewell, Jr., corporate icon and Publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel.
“Although the basketball aspect is enticing, our goal is to ensure that our youth enjoy a meaningful life experiences” said Charisse Bremond Weaver, President and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade. Her intentions are clearly evident in the camp schedule, which features four days of science experiments sponsored by the California Science Center, financial literacy training sponsored by Wells Fargo, N.A., and leadership and life/social skills development. In addition, each youth will receive two camp T-shirts, a goodie bag, daily free lunch from Greg Dulan of Dulan’s Catering, and a special surprise from Nielson and Fox.
The Jim Cleamons Books and Basketball Camp is widely supported by key organizations in the community, including the Los Angeles Lakers’ Youth Foundation, Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreations, Los Angeles Sentinel, Nestle, The Gas Company, Northrop Grumman, Verizon, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, the California Science Center, Wells Fargo, Southern California Edison, Priority One Credit Uni on, Nielson Media, and Washington Mutual, Bank of America among others.
Coach “Jim” James Mitchell Cleamons is a former Ohio State University All-American and First-Round draft pick of the Los Angeles Lakers. He served as Head Coach of the Dallas Mavericks and Assistant Coach of the Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Hornets, and currently, the Los Angeles Lakers. A nine-year veteran of the NBA, Coach Cleamons played for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New York Knicks and the Washington Bullets. During his tenure, he has won eight NBA title rings.
Cleamons’ desire to “give forward” to the community and tackle some of the values and education he felt our youth were missing led him and partner, ABA/NBA legend James Jones, to develop the Jim Cleamons Academic All-Stars Youth Development Program. The Brotherhood Crusade adopted the Program in 2004 as one of its premier community development programs.
