With their offseason additions, the Lakers are attracting a ton of attention.  Well, they are the Lakers, so they always attract attention.  Photo by Leon Bennett

Usually nobody pays attention to a preseason game, but with the moves that the Lakers pulled off, everybody is watching.

Check this out for a headline of the Lakers first preseason game with their newly acquired Hall of Fame players:

Warriors rout the Lakers by 27 points.

The subtitle would be:

Cancel the Lakers championship parade.

Thankfully neither of those titles really tell the story, because the Lakers did not play their starters in the second half of the game.  When they did have Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, and Pau Gasol in the game, they led by 10 points in the first period, and by seven at halftime.

The rout happened when the Warriors went on a 35-0 second half run against Lakers who will not get significant playing time, and some of them will not even make the team.  But when the Lakers did have the starters in, they looked pretty good.

Nash ran the offense, and wherever he went with the ball he attracted a lot of attention.  When he would drive to one side of the court the defense would rotate to him, and he would quickly whip the ball to a wide open man on the other side of the court for a wide open shot.

That is exactly what the Lakers envisioned when they traded for Nash.  That would be wide open players who would get easy looks at the basket, just like the Phoenix Suns enjoyed for years.  Amar’e Stoudemire was great when paired with Nash, and he just is not as effective on the offensive side of the court in New York.

In the first half of the game the Lakers did everything that they set out to do, and that is without Dwight Howard in the line up, who is still recovering from off season back surgery.

This team is already showing signs that they will be special.
