Colgate-Palmolive and Ralphs Grocery Company join speaker Karen Bass, Deputy Mayor Larry Frank, and Councilmember Janice Hahn in supporting youth employment and training

School is out and thousands of teens as well as recent graduates are in need of summer jobs. The Colgate-Palmolive Company and Ralphs Grocery Company have partnered for the fifth year to provide job training and employment to Los Angeles City residents. The goal of this collaboration is to lead to permanent employment for some and to serve as a stepping-stone to higher education for others.

The Colgate P.O.W.E.R. (Preparing Our World through Education and Responsibility) Youth Employment Initiative will kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at the LA/Watts Youth Opportunity Center located at 1513 East 103rd Street in Watts.

For the fifth consecutive year, Colgate-Palmolive and Ralphs will present a $20,000 grant to support the HIRE LA’s Youth program. The grant includes $10,000 in funds and $10,000 in Colgate products.

This marks Colgate-Palmolive’s 15th year supporting youth employment programs, and its fifth year in partnership with Ralphs.

When consumers purchase Colgate products at retail locations such as P.O.W.E.R.’s Los Angeles retail partner Ralphs, they help support grants that benefit youth employment, which instills a work ethic among youth and pride in the community.

“At Colgate, we believe that exposure to this program will have a lasting and positive effect on these young adults and on the community,” said Wanda Austin-Wingood, Brand Manager of Multicultural Marketing at Colgate-Palmolive. “These young people have so much to offer the city of Los Angeles and we hope that their experience with the POWER program will be a stepping stone to their future success in whichever career path they choose.”

In addition, Ralphs has pledged over 100 jobs in their stores throughout the City of Los Angeles. “Ralphs and Colgate-Palmolive are both committed to making a difference in our communities. We want to help build a strong foundation for urban youth so that they will have the tools and skills needed to become successful, productive citizens,” said Mike Donnelly, President of Ralphs Grocery Company. “By making this donation to the Colgate P.O.W.E.R program, we are reinforcing our commitment to enhancing the lives of young people in our communities.”

LAYOM utilizes innovative and creative techniques including outreach to local businesses to help match young people up with mentors.

In hands-on and apprenticeship environments, young people are able to hone their skills for future employment. “For nearly five years, LAYOM has brought to the table representatives from the retail, entertainment and business industries to increase the number of employment and training opportunities available to inner-city youth,” said Lisa Salazar, Director of LAYOM. “We’re proud to say that many young people have benefited from our program so far.”
