Gospel singers from all over the country and Southern California will attend the Heritage Music Foundation’s 26th Annual Gospel Music Conference, October 19-22, in Los Angeles. All gospel music enthusiasts are invited to register and participate.

“The theme of the Heritage 2011 National Conference is ‘Gospel Music: Remolding the Image of the Community,'” said Dr. Margaret Pleasant Douroux, founder of the Heritage Music Foundation.

“The world is in trouble. Everyone, but especially young persons, needs to learn about our roots in the church and gospel music to transform for the better the way we look at ourselves.”

The event features more than a dozen national gospel artists and new music penned and recorded by Dr. Margaret Pleasant Douroux and others. Special concerts presented at the Heritage Gospel Music National Conference are open to the public at no charge. The New Music Choir will open each evening session with new compositions and composers.

All activities, except the Founder’s Breakfast, are at Greater New Bethel Church, 601 East 99th Street in Inglewood. Registrants will participate in classes and rehearsals. Morning classes are at Greater New Bethel, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Thursday and Friday.

Following continental breakfast at 8 a.m., registrants attend Dr. Douroux’s ‘Living Treasures’ seminars on the art and historical timeline of gospel. Other morning activities include mentoring sessions where young people work hands-on with experienced gospel musicians.

On Wednesday through Friday afternoons at 1 p.m., new composers will teach compositions to the mass choir in preparation for nightly presentations. At 3 p.m., renowned composer-recording artist, V. Michael McKay, will conduct new music and his new book, ‘Hymns for Him,’ will be available during the sessions.

Afternoon activities also include jam sessions and HMF Satellite Chapters Business Meetings. Full registration is $95.00. For details, call (310) 674-1903 or register online at

On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., HMF’s grand kick-off concert, ‘Remolding the Image,’ will be held featuring noted recording artist, D.J. Rogers, Dr. Douroux and the Heritage Mass Choir, and the L.A. Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America under the direction of Dr. Rodena Preston. The emcee will be Edna Tatum, host of the popular ‘Gospel Classics’ show on KPFK-FM 90.7 FM radio.
The Thursday Night ‘Youth In Concert’ program begins at 7:30 p.m., with special guests Tony Jones and the GMWA Young Adult Choir, former NBA star Minister Tyrone Powell, and Rodney Teal with the Heritage Conference Choir.

The Grand Finale Concert is Friday night at 7:30 p.m., at Greater New Bethel. The all-star celebration stars V. Michael McKay, recording artist Tunesha Crispell, Remnant, an all female Gospel quartet; Dove Award winner Dr. Beau Williams; and recording artist and choir director, Minister Calvin Rhone. KJLH radio announcer Kevin Nash will emcee the program.

On Saturday morning, the week will conclude with the Annual Breakfast and Fashion Show at Southern Missionary Baptist Church, 4678 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. The donation is $30. Proceeds benefit the development of HMF Gospel House.

“Gospel House will be a shrine to gospel music in Los Angeles,” said Dr. Douroux, who began her career as a schoolteacher. “Our strategic plan is to nurture and preserve gospel music in Los Angeles and worldwide.”
