Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr., will lead a Prostate Cancer Education Symposium on Saturday, June 15, at 8 a.m., at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 7900 South Western Avenue in Los Angeles.

The Southern California A.M.E. Ministerial Alliance headed by Pastor John E. Cager of Second A.M.E. is event co-sponsor and the Men’s Ministries of Bryant Temple A.M.E. and Bethel A.M.E. will serve as co-hosts.

“Given the disparity in death rates among African American men compared to other men, this is a health issue and a justice issue that necessitates the church’s involvement,” said Bishop Kirkland, presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District.

Pastor Cager noted, “Prostate cancer is detectable, treatable and curable.  We hope to empower our brothers to be proactive and save lives.”

“The symposium includes free breakfast and covers understanding the prostate, screening and early detection, the importance of faith in healing, and treatments and clinical trials for recurring and advanced disease,” said Bryant Temple Pastor Clyde W. Oden.

Bethel Pastor Kelvin T. Calloway added, “We encourage our women to bring their men to this event.”

Also, on Sunday, June 16, the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) will hold its ‘5th Annual Father’s Day Rally Against Prostate Cancer’ in churches nationwide.

“PHEN’s Father’s Day Rally has proven to be an effective education and awareness outreach initiative for African American families,” said PHEN founder and President Thomas A. Farrington.

For information, call Bethel A.M.E. at (323) 750-3240 or PHEN at (617) 481-4020.
