Kids Walk Across America teams with EXPO Center & Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade to launch “FIT WEDNESDAYS” youth fitness walks for South Los Angeles youth

The EXPO Center and Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade will launch Kids Walk Across America “Fit Wednesdays” as a free community wide youth activity on eight consecutive Wednesdays at Soboroff Sports Field, July 13th through August 31st, 2011. Kids Walk Across America is a Los Angeles based nonprofit devoted to growing fit, healthy American kids through fun youth walk events.

Activities promote healthy lifetime habits in essential areas of fitness & exercise, nutrition and social development, with kids and parents also participating in weekly challenges to apply what they have learned. “We want every child to have a positive experience around exercise and fun, that builds self-esteem and teaches a child healthy habits that will stick with them over a lifetime,” says Jackie Tsujimoto, Co-director of the program.

The 8-week program targets children and youth, ages 3-12 and parents, however any age can benefit from the walk and educational activities. Free on site registration begins Wednesday, July 13th and remains open every Wednesday during event hours from 4pm-6pm. Walkers can go at their own pace around the perimeter of Expo Center’s state of the art sports field, stopping at four fun, interactive stations led by energetic AmeriCorps volunteers with Brotherhood Crusade.

Participants will learn something new each week about our “Super Foods” and the U.S. States that produce them. Kids and parents will receive practical fitness, health & nutrition tips to help kids improve their sports game and school performance, and ideas to create positive social changes in our community. Free crafts and family activities are also offered. At the finish line, walkers will also receive a fresh piece of fruit as a healthy reward, sponsored by Coast Produce Company in Los Angeles.

Participants receive a weekly game card with fun healthy habit challenges in all key areas to reinforce at home. Kids Walk also provides adult wellness information, weekly recipe cards and ideas to help parents lead by example to make fitness and healthy living a family habit. Coast Produce will also sponsor a small outdoor produce market offering high quality, “peak of season” summer fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices to encourage eating fresh everyday. Kids Walk events intentionally overlap with an anti-obesity and violence prevention soccer program, offered at the park through a collaborative partnership including Brotherhood Crusade and the US Soccer Foundation.

On site registration begins Wed. July 13th. Youth receive a free lanyard, weekly challenge cards, and weekly walk rewards. EXPO Center/Soboroff Sports Field, 3980 Bill Robertson Lane, Los Angeles, CA 90037.
