Thanksgiving may be the holiday that most nutritionist could do without, and the holiday that produces plenty of war stories dealing with family. But, it can become the favorite feast as a reminder of being grateful.  Parents, I would like to encourage you to start a gratitude journal with your children.  At the beginning of the year, I personally started my gratitude journal.  The purpose of my gratitude journal was to record all the things that I was and am grateful for.  I begin each morning writing in my journal three things for which I was grateful.

This exercise, of writing in my journal about the things for which I was grateful, proved to be very enlightening and inspiring. Gratitude means thankful by, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures and acknowledging everything that you receive.  It means learning to live life to the fullest, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given.  Parents, by engaging in this exercise, you give your children the tools to foster relationships with the good that surrounds them, allowing them to shift their focus from what their lives lack and concentrate on the abundance that is already present.

Parents, with small children should record their gratitude thoughts for them.  Find time during the day to sit with your child and investigate the things for which they are grateful. Help them to examine what being grateful is all about.  The practice of acknowledging gratitude and giving thanks will help cultivate an “attitude for gratitude.”
