Just Get Started

I’ve always liked to think of myself as a ‘do it now’ sort of person. However, I’ve realized that I sometimes use ‘busy-ness’ as an excuse not to do the things I know I really should.

I don’t make excuses about the little things (like cleaning out my refrigerator), but the bigger things (like putting together proposals or writing my next book), stuff that will require more time, more commitment, and involve a bigger risk of failure. So, I started thinking about this whole subject of procrastination.

In my twenties, I was a ‘master procrastinator.’ I could have gotten awards for how much I put things off. I would come up with all sorts of creative reasons why ‘now’ just isn’t the right time.

Too busy. Too broke. Too stressed. Economy too unstable. Too risky. Too inexperienced. Too tired. Too young. Too disruptive. These excuses never helped me overcome my initial reluctance.

The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is their ability to get started. So I am writing to you today to say, “Just get started.” Stop waiting for the perfect circumstances. Stop waiting for everything to fall into place. If you know what you need to do, take a step now. Perhaps the next step seems small, but at least you’ve taken a step!

I have learned that quite often the perfect moments never come. Again, rather than waiting on perfection, take even the smallest step.

As you take the small steps, don’t make excuses. Many people attempt to explain away their circumstances in life by making excuses. “I never got any breaks.” “I didn’t have much help from my parents.” “No one gave me a chance.”

The Bible is full of people who had many obstacles in their lives and yet learned to trust God and live a life of faith. David got started when he picked up a stone to fight Goliath.

Noah got started with a nail and hammer to build an ark. Daniel got started with prayer, which delivered him out of the lion’s den. The common denominator is they all started with something small.

Pick up the pencil and write the vision. Pick up the guitar and write the music to the song. Start the ministry. Start the business. Start the search for the new home. Start the search for the new job. Start the savings account. Start looking for a new car.

My point is…Just get started.
