Job-training grants to So. Cal. agencies

CNS–A handful of Southern California agencies received federal grants aimed at providing job-training for transportation-related positions, state officials announced today.

The $2.7 million in economic-stimulus grants awarded to agencies in the state are part of the Federal Highway Administration’s “On the Job Training/Support Services” program. The money will be used to fund pre- apprenticeships and training centers for women, minorities, veterans and otherwise disadvantaged people pursuing jobs in highway construction.

“These grants will help to create opportunities during these tough economic times,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said. “We are providing crucial job training to people that will help lay the groundwork for jobs and drive California on the road to economic recovery.”

Among the Southern California agencies receiving grants were:

–the Century Community Training Program in Los Angeles, which was awarded $290,000 to provide construction-skills training in highway, street and bridge construction;

–the Family Management Matters “Warriors Career Bridge” program in Anaheim and Orange County, which was awarded $256,620 to bolster communication between veteran organizations and public works employers;

–Pacific Gateway in Long Beach, which was awarded $230,789 for outreach, recruitment, job-training and job-retention assistance in highway construction positions; and

–the United Job Creation Council Re-entry Construction Employment Project in Los Angeles, which was awarded $254,840 to provide highway construction skills training, tools and equipment.
