Jane Frances Moore Shropshire passed away August 22, 2010 at her home after 85 eventful and adventurous years of life.
Jane was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on February 22, 1925 to Leroy G. and Theresia Bolden Moore. She was their second child, joining her brother Leroy Jr. Her parents were educators, spending most of their careers at Langston University near Guthrie, Oklahoma where Jane was raised and attended grade school. She was an outstanding student, focusing on the sciences.
When it came time for college, she matriculated to Langston and graduated with a degree in chemistry. In 1942 she pledged and began a lifetime of dedication to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The love of two lifetimes began at Meharry Medical College. While earning her degree as a medical technician, “Miss Meharry” met her future husband Claudius Napoleon Shropshire, Jr. and they married on June 17, 1951 shortly after graduation. In order to complete his internship as an Air Force Officer at Madigan Army Hospital, the family left the South together to move to Tacoma, Washington. Their first son, Claudius III, was born in 1952. Eventually, Jane and her husband relocated to Los Angeles, California where their second son, Kenneth, was born in 1955.
Jane dedicated her life from this time forward to her husband, to raising her two children “Buddy” and “Kenny”, to bringing her parents and mother-in-law into the household, and to impacting the lives of multitudes of children in and out of the family home for two generations.
Jane demonstrated her love and devotion to children by attending every single activity in which her sons participated, including Baldwin Plaza Little League, the Crenshaw YMCA Thunderbirds teams, Dorsey High School sports and beyond. She displayed her generosity by feeding every child involved in each activity who visited the family home, endlessly driving all who needed to be transported and advising all lovingly.
A generation later Jane immersed herself in the activities of her grandchildren Claudius IV and Quentin: soccer, basketball, and the L.A. Jets track team. She also regularly scheduled trips to Philadelphia to support her other two grandchildren, Theresa and Samuel, at their tennis and soccer matches. To two generations of relatives and extended family, she was lovingly known as “Mama Shrop”, Grandmother, and Grandma Jane.
For decades, Jane worked tirelessly with the PTA, various school booster clubs, the Drew Auxiliary, and many other community organizations. She leaves a rich legacy of enriching the lives of others. Although the true extent of her generosity was not known to many, Jane was discreetly philanthropic and donated to worthy causes in a quiet, unassuming way. She leaves a rich legacy of enriching the lives of others.
Before her husband preceded her in death in 1990, the couple enjoyed traveling together to National Medical Association conventions across the country, and other locations in the Caribbean and the world. This past June, Jane vacationed with family in Orlando, Florida – a memorable experience, which will remain in the hearts of loved ones forever.
Jane was adored, admired and respected by many. Among those left to cherish her memory are sons Claudius III, an assistant principal in charge of counseling services at L.A. University High School, and Kenneth, a professor in the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Jane is also survived by their respective wives Renee and Diane; grandchildren Claudius IV, Quentin, Theresa and Samuel; older brother Leroy Moore; niece, Sandra and nephew, David; sister-in-law, Bettye Shropshire; god-daughter, Wanda Briscoe; many cousins whom she loved deeply, and a host of other relatives and friends. All have been touched by “Mama Shrop’s” compassionate and loving ways and will miss her presence always.
