Jakes Shares Overcoming Life’s Challenges

Sarah Jakes

Sarah Jakes knows first-hand about pain and challenges.  The daughter of the renowned Bishop T. D. Jakes, she nearly lost hope after experiencing a lonely childhood, teen pregnancy, and a failed marriage.

Fortunately, she turned to God, and ultimately emerged victorious.  Today, she is a successful entrepreneur, media personality, and writer whose latest book, ‘Lost & Found,’ just hit bookstores across the nation.

In ‘Lost and Found,’ Sarah reveals how God guided and kept her in the midst of her trials.

“Whether you were raised in a church, like me, or never set foot in a church, we all have something, a past and maybe scars that may still hurt when you think about it.

“But, [we must] really confront our past, lay the pain and guilt to rest, so we can move on in peace.

“My prayer is that someone reads the book and sees that God’s grace is certainly sufficient and that it flows into their own lives,” said Sarah.  Below are insights she shared about during an interview with the L.A. Sentinel.

LAS: What factors led you to write ‘Lost & Found?’

SJ: After blogging for about three years, my publisher asked would I write a memoir. I really wanted to share the life lessons and inspiration that existed on my blog.

LAS: What are the main topics covered in the book?

SJ: There are so many topics, but I think the main one is learning to see yourself as God sees you, loving yourself past your scars, past your mistakes that you think kept you from having a future, somehow looking beyond those chains and really dare to be free.

LAS: Will both believers and non-believers be helped by the book’s message?

SJ: Absolutely! I was raised in church and waitressing at a strip club.  I found comfort working in a strip club because there wasn’t nearly as much judgment as I found working at church.

There’s this dichotomy in different worlds, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have self-love, it doesn’t matter which world you are in if you can’t face yourself.

That’s why I have been so transparent about my challenges and obstacles.  I want to show that the beauty of walking with God isn’t about how we come out on the other side, but it really is about how He is with us throughout our trials and storms.  Always believe and anything you sow in love with come back to you.

LAS: How do you balance home and work?

SJ: When I’m at home, I only work during the time that the children are in school.  When they are out of school, I really take time with them.  I don’t have my phone in my hand talking or texting. I really devote all of my time and attention to them.  When I’m on the road, I will call them and talk on Facetime. I don’t want to be just a provider, but I want a presence in their lives.  They are my priority and everything else flows from there.

LAS: What future writing do you plan?

SJ: My next book is slated for release this fall, a devotional based on the book of Ruth and it really updates this notion that we’ve all been through something and that if we’re willing, it can all work together for our good.
