Its Our Time to Help
By Danny J. Bakewell Jr. (Contributing Editor)

Whew! It's hard to exhale after last week's historical inauguration ceremony where Barack Obama was sworn in as America's first Black President, but that we must, and now as he rolls ups his sleeves to conquer the difficult task of putting this country back on track again we must help.

We must first start in our own homes, making sure that our kids are focusing on getting and maintaining high grades in school.

Second, we must look within ourselves and discover where we are spending unnecessarily and be thankful for the jobs that we have regardless of what the paycheck looks like.

Third, we should look into our community and seek out where we can offer our services as volunteers.

As President Obama has stated and as we know from the many news headlines, we are in a difficult situation. The economy has worsened. More jobs have been lost, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

President Obama has presented his enormous stimulus plan that is expected to pass this week and $22 billion is earmarked for the state of California.

That money will only help us stay afloat. Teachers have to do a much better job with our children. Local government agencies have to keep their budgets tight while maintaining the services of police and fire departments.

Small businesses have to become more innovative than ever now to keep their doors open, and big businesses will now be more accountable for what they do.

Churches will have to play their part to keep our spiritual contact with God and give as much back to its members as they have been receiving.

We are all in this together and we will all pull through this together.

We have already said yes we can once before and we did! Yes We Can Again! And we will overcome.

So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to "Talk to Danny."

God Bless You,

Danny J. Bakewell, Jr.
