Olevia Mitchell of Inglewood High School is one of 300 students nationwide to be awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation’s Dell Scholars Program. More than $6 million in scholarships will be awarded to this year’s ell Scholars to attend a college of their choice.

The Dell Scholar’s Program awards to students who are participating in a college-readiness program. Olevia Mitchell is a current AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) student and has been involved in the program for four years.

AVID is a fourth-through twelth-grade system to prepare students in the academic middle, especially historically and economically underserved students, for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.

“AVID helped me to navigate the college process and provided me with academic support through AVID strategies like tutorials. I feel very fortunate to be an AVID student and I hope more students will take part in AVID for years to come,” said Olevia Mitchell.

“These students are a testament to hard work and individual determination,” said Jim Nelson, executive director of AVID. “With the generous support of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, college will now become a reality for these students and families.”

The Dell Scholars Program targets underserved youth and lower income students from high schools nationwide, many of whom participate in the AVID program to promote higher education.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited high school, demonstrated financial need, a minimum GPA of 2.4 on a 4.0 scale, and intent to enter a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall.

Olevia Mitchell is the president of AVID at Inglewood High School. She won the prestigious Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship and the Nordstrom Scholarship. Olevia currently has earned a GPA of 3.9, and plans to attend Syracuse University in the fall as a Civil Engineering student.
