Adding an extra element to holiday outreach, Holy Hands Ministry will provide free professional grooming during the Thanksgiving season to those in need.
Thanks Giving Beauty Day takes place on Monday, November 25, in the parking lot of Iglesia De’ Dios House of God Church, 3945 Carlin Avenue in Lynwood. Registration opens at 7 a.m., with the event kicking-off at 8 a.m. The Rev. Toby Lazo is the host pastor.
Julie Fletcher, Holy Hands founder, explained, “Our mission is to feed, clothe, esteem, educate, equip and beautify the disenfranchised.”
To carry out the undertaking, Fletcher has recruited an “army of volunteers” from throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area to donate their talents as hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists, estheticians and nail artists.
Lending support are co-sponsors Pastor Murvel and Lady Amada Williams of Cover the Children Ministry, Dr. Dione Washington of My Sister’s Closet, Pastor Michelle Givens of Women United in Christ and Pastor Garon Harden of Greater Open Door Worldwide Ministry, Fletcher’s church home.
“In the past, we have served upwards of 1200 individuals from homeless shelters, rehabilitation programs, and foster care group homes who show up in mass proportions,” said Fletcher.
“Beauty Day is open to the entire family. We also have focused services geared towards current and former foster youth.”
Fletcher launched Holy Hands more than eight years ago. At that time, she was the owner/operator of Holy Hands Beauty Salon, but was compelled to do more to share her love of the Lord. Inspired by Matthew 25:40 where Jesus says, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me,” Fletcher created Beauty Day to spread the love of God though her profession.
“It’s my ministry,” said Fletcher in an interview with the Christian Examiner newspaper. “When you have someone’s hair, that’s when you can really minister to people. You’ve got their undivided attention.”
Activities will begin with prayer and then 100 professionals will invite registrants into beauty stations. In addition, free clothing will be available, entertainers will perform, empowerment sessions will be held and children can play in the jumpers.
As for the future, Fletcher aims to offer Beauty Day throughout California and eventually nationwide. Believing she will succeed, she turns to her favorite scripture of Philippians 3:14 to remain encouraged.
“I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
