Preaching by the Rev. James M. Lawson, Jr., will highlight the ‘All Saints and Lift Every Voice Sing’ observance at Holman United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 4, at the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services.

“We’re excited to welcome our pastor emeritus, the Rev. James Lawson. He has the insight and foresight to declare, “Thus says the Lord!” He remains one of our quintessential prophetic leaders with the ability to analyze destructive schemes and systems, and amplify non-violent strategies to achieve peace through justice and equality for all,” said Pastor Kelvin Sauls.

A Methodist minister for more than 50 years, the Rev. Lawson served as pastor of Holman from 1974 until his retirement in 1999. He is also internationally recognized as the leading strategist in the principles of nonviolence and was cited by Time Magazine as one of seven icons of the civil rights movement who paved the way for President Barack Obama’s historic election.

“This worship celebration will also afford us the opportunity to celebrate the lives and contributions of those who have transitioned this past year. Our prayer is to provide comfort and support to family and friends as we remember loved ones, and rejoice in God’s never-ending grace,” noted Rev. Sauls.

In addition, the video, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ produced by The Balm In Gilead, will be screened in the L.L. White Fellowship Hall after each service.  The program, set to the music of the Negro National Anthem, features images of significant African American individuals and historic moments.  Congregations across the nation are showing the video to encourage civic engagement by voting on November 6.

“Therefore, our time will not just be spent to re-member those who have transitioned from this life, but also re-position and re-tool ourselves to keep on fighting the good fight, “lift every voice,” and vote to realize the beloved community,” Pastor Sauls said.

Holman United Methodist Church is located at 3320 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. Call (323) 731-7285 for more information.
