Pasadena Councilman Chris Holden will present the Key to the City to the widow of the legendary baseball icon Jackie Robinson-Rachel Robinson in a Mothers Day ceremony May 10 at Robinson Park on North Fair Oaks.

The highly anticipated free of charge public event organized by businessman Ishmael Trone will also unveil the ground breaking of the $24 million Robinson Park Master Plan.

“The expansion and name change of the Robinson Park is a welcome occasion for the Northwest area,” said Trone. I am elated that Jackie Robinson All Star Weekend will bring together Rachel Robinson and the City of Pasadena, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Sparks in a celebratory way at this Mothers day event.” Trone is the co-chair of Robinson Master Plan Committee and event coordinator.

Mrs. Robinson will become the first African American associated with the City of Pasadena and Mayor Bill Boggard to receive Keys to the City and the historic ceremony will be hosted by Holden.

The new world class state of the art sports complex that is scheduled for phase one in May is named after Pasadena’s most famous role modes Jackie Robinson and his brother Matthew “Mack” Robinson. The community is in the process of renaming the park and two adjacent streets in honor of both of the brothers.

Jackie Robinson was the first Black to play in the Major League Baseball in 1947 and was inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
