Outfitted in hats, gloves and colorful attire, more than 50 women came together at the Ladies High Tea sponsored by the Hosanna Broadcasting Foundation (HBF) on July 12.

The purpose behind the fundraiser, besides fun and fellowship, was to raise awareness to assist African orphans who have lost their parents to the HIV/AIDS virus.  HBF operates the Hosanna House orphanage in Ethiopia where 19 girls live.  Proceeds from the event went toward that project.

Finger sandwiches, assorted fruit and a variety of teas were passed around as the audience enjoyed a video presentation about HBF, remarks by guest speaker Kathleen Riche, and a fashion show.  In addition, soloist Stephanie Fields and saxophonist Reginald Fredricks provided musical entertainment.

Tersit Asrat, founder and president of Hosanna Broadcasting Network (HBN) in Carson, is the impetus behind this effort to help Ethiopian orphans.  Asrat established the non-profit foundation in 2000 to aid underserved populations around the world.

“This ‘High Tea’ is about helping and loving those who need care.  In any shape or form that one can partner with us to help those being raped or molested, we welcome you.  I firmly believe that we have a responsibility to help those in need,” said Asrat.

Agreeing with that philosophy, Riche noted, “I’ve known Tersit for quite some time and I have a ministry of my own in Ethiopia. I have seen the girls and her work with them.

“The message I share today is about what I have seen there and the need for funding that still exists.”

Myra Wallace, HBN vice president and emcee of the High Tea, added,  “Tersit is my friend and sister in the Lord. She really believes in spreading the gospel and I do, too. She takes to heart every project she does.

“I have a passion for young people, especially for the ones that she has taken on in the orphanage, so I’m here in support of her efforts.”

Explaining that fundraising for the orphanage is an ongoing process, Asrat announced that a major black tie event, ‘Blessing Africa,’ is set for Friday, October 3, at the Four Points By Sheraton Hotel, 9750 Airport Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Also, Asrat spreads the Word of God through her radio and television networks that provide Christian programming 24-hours a day.  According to her website, HBN reaches listeners in the U.S., Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East with preaching, teaching, gospel music, health and educational programs.

Locally, HBN airs on Direct TV Channel 20, Dish Channel 20, ATT Chanel 3, DRRSat, and Glory Star bouquet, ROKU.
