Bo County, Sierra Leone – 'Grey's Anatomy' star Isaiah Washington is spending his off time from his hit TV show working in Sierra Leone in West Africa building a school for young villagers.

Inspired by the discovery of his direct genetic link to the Mende' people of Sierra Leone, Washingon through his Gondobay Manga Foundation starting working to improve the lives of the people there.

His Los Angeles based non-profit Gondobay Manga Foundation has stepped up its efforts in building a primary education school in the rural village of Njala Kendema in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where 70 percent of the country’s population lives below the poverty line and 26 percent are unable to meet the basic food requirements.

Named the Chief Foday Golia Memorial School, the school is expected to seat 150 students upon completion in August 2007 with plans to accommodate more students in the future. Currently, the village of Njala Kendema has 115 children of primary education age (K-5th grades). In addition to classrooms, the school will also have living quarters for teachers.

When asked about the name of the school, the Foundation’s founder actor Isaiah Washington shared, “I was told that Chief Golia prayed that a school be built for his children in his village of Njala Kendema on his death bed. I am just trying to fulfill that prayer, seeing that 'Isaiah' means 'Salvation of God.'"
