Pastor Andrae Crouch
Hosts Abstinence Town Hall Meeting

“Every parent and child should question how safe is safe sex education,” said Desireé A. Harris, M.A., Executive Director of Sex, Love and Choices (SLC), a faith-based nonprofit in Pasadena.

Funding to promote contraceptives and “safe sex” education among teens is 10 times higher than funding for abstinence education. An estimated $1.8 billion is spent promoting “safe sex” initiatives verses $176 million promoting abstinence, according to the National Abstinence Education Resource, said Harris. Sadly, teens and young adults account for the highest amount of sexually transmitted diseases in Los Angeles County, she added, referencing the County of Los Angeles Public Health 2005 Annual Adolescent STD Morbidity Report.

SLC will partner with Gospel Legend Andraé Crouch to host a town hall meeting called “The Parent Project” from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 21 at Christ Memorial Church located at 13333 Vaughn St. in San Fernando Valley. Admission is free.

“When you read stats like those, you have to question the current policies and practices,” said Crouch, Senior Pastor of New Christ Memorial Church in San Fernando, CA. “This should be one of the major public health issues of our time.”

The purpose of the town hall meeting is to inform parents on educational options so they can be empowered to choose culturally sensitive, age-appropriate intervention for their children. Parents play an important role when it comes to relationships and reproductive health. Thirty-seven percent of teen boys and girls surveyed said their parents have the most influence on their sexual decisions, compared to media, friends, health teachers and religious leaders, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

SLC takes a holistic approach in teaching the truth about sex and abstinence by helping 6th – 12th grade students and their parents or caregivers understand the psychological and health dangers of sexual activity outside of marriage. SLC is a character-based abstinence-until-marriage and leadership development program addressing the social concerns of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, underage drinking, low education attainment, and other risky behaviors.
