From the Heart of Hollywood: Hollywood with a Heart

by Roger Reid

We have all watched our favorite T.V. shows and movies where circumstance has overwhelmed the principle actor. We follow them as one thing and then another comes loose at the seams until they are faced with what seems to be insurmountable problems, but ones that they have to face.

In writing parlance this is called rising conflict which puts the protagonist (the hero) on a path that they can not resist and thus they are influenced to follow the “Heroes Arch” of a story line.  Rising conflict in a story is invariably resolved and generally the hero lives happily ever after.

Life is never that easy. When misfortunes befall us in real life, rarely does someone show up on horseback “just in the knick of time” to rescue us from the fate that stands before us. But we still maintain faith, and often that is all we have to stand on.

Ward AME Church Lay organization felt it a thoughtful Christian gesture to see to the clothing necessities of affected families in need.  Inspired by a vision of  Ward’s  Sis. Billie O’Neal, under the leadership of Ward Lay Organization President Marguerite Davis, clothing donations were solicited for a Saturday May 15th giveaway. Ward Director of Lay Activities Sis. Bridget Quilter and Sis. Ernestine Chapman worked tirelessly to receive the donations and then arranged for a bouncer and a popcorn machine to be present for the children of the families in need.  In the true spirit of unity, members of the choir, usher board, altar guild, Sunday School workers, and people from various church ministries.

On Monday May 10th I thought to contact my friend Tiara Nappe owner of “It’s A Wrap!” Production Wardrobe Sales. “It’s A Wrap!” uniquely offers the very wardrobe worn in countless movies and television productions to the public. Her heart had opened to Ward before during our Katrina clothing drive and her significant contribution made a marked difference in the lives of Katrina victims.  “It’s A Wrap!” has locations in Los Angeles and Burbank.

“I asked if she might be willing to make a contribution to our efforts and she said “yes”.  Little was I expecting the blessing that ensued.  My pick-up truck’s shocks were riding low when I pulled away, followed by my wife Cheryl in her over loaded mini-van,” said Roger Reid.

Ward’s bungalow at 1182 W. 25th St. across from the church had to transform to accommodate the out pouring.  Racks were built from wall to wall in each room through contribution of Bro. Terrence Green of Topaz Construction.  A twenty foot rolling rack was also built to take the overflow out onto the parking lot.

Ward’s  pastor Dr. C. Dennis Williams has called for Ward to participate in a “Daniel Fast” this week culminating on May 29th followed by Ward’s 1st Annual Fellowship Feeding. Ward will reach out and feed the surrounding community in conjunction with the A. W. Jordan Women’s Missionary Society, headed by Sis Brenda Walker and Ward Feeding Ministry spearheaded by Bro. and Sis. Scott and Pamela Sanders.

Ward AME Church will continue implementing the clothing giveaway along with the Fellowship Luncheon on May 29th.  The community is invited to participate, especially those who are preparing for back-to-work and who want “tender loving care” from the Ward Church family..

Our faith has instructed us what we are supposed to do unto one another. Our hero did not arrive on horseback, but rather on a donkey.

Ward AME Church is located at 1177 W. 25th St. Los Angeles 90007. Please call (213)747-1367 for details.

Roger Reid is a member of Ward AME Church and the Screen Actors Guild
