Four people were injured — two critically — in a five-vehicle collision this afternoon in South Los Angeles.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched at 4:58 p.m. to the 500 block of East Vernon Avenue, said Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Paramedics took four patients to area hospitals, some of whom had to be extricated from the wreckage, according to the LAFD.
