Charmette Bonpua

Charmette Bonpua was the chief of staff for Los Angeles City Councilman Herb J. Wesson, Jr. and served as special counselor to Wesson when he was Assembly Speaker and Speaker Emeritus in the California Legislature.

She also has served as special counselor to Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

Charmette first learned the fine art of bill and budget analysis from the Legislative Analysts Office where she provided fiscal and policy advice to the Legislature on health and higher education issues. She later moved to the California Debt Advisory Commission where she wrote and published an Issue Brief for which the Commission earned an Award for Excellence from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

In the state Legislature, Charmette has served as Chief Consultant for the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee and Principal Consultant for the Vice Chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

In 2002, Charmette was recognized by the California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, the California Legislative Black Caucus and the Latino Legislative Caucus of California for her accomplishments as a legislative staff of color.

One of her great joys was her work with Asian Pacific youth throughout the state, which includes serving as Chair of the Board of the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project, a non-profit corporation which sponsors an annual conference designed to develop young people’s leadership skills and inspire them to a life of public service.

Born and raised in Cebu, Philippines, Charmette immigrated with her family to California in 1981.

Charmette held a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara; and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Columbia University in New York City.
