F. Glenn Harvey Leads Team Broadway Federal Bank Straight to the Top

For years Broadway Federal Bank has been known as the community banking institution started by Elbert Hudson and later built upon by his son Paul Hudson.

While the Hudson family is still involved with Broadway Federal Savings Bank, these days this community institution is lead by an entirely new generation of leadership. F. Glenn Harvey is the new president and CEO of Broadway Federal and it is under his leadership that he is rebuilding the Broadway Federal brand and bringing to the bank some of the most dynamic and well-trained young business professionals this bank or any other bank has ever had.

For most people, listening to someone talk about banking, banking terms and banking products can be a bit overwhelming, but it is the ease and clarity with which F. Glenn Harvey speaks about the industry, that makes you feel very well-educated in finance, in fact the words just flow into comprehension. But being well versed and knowing how to sell banking is but part of the arsenal that this 40-something president and chief operating officer of Broadway Federal Bank brings with him when running the 61-year-old institution. Speaking about banking is but one of Harvey’s management gifts, his other is his ability to hone in on the top-quality experiences he and others of the bank are bringing into the Los Angeles community.

Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Harvey left for the East Coast after graduating from UCLA with a law degree and MBA in 1986. He made his way over to what he refers to as the Mecca for bankers – also known as Wall Street. He landed at 55 Wall Street, the site of Citibank in New York and over the next 20 years held various assignments with elite national and international banks.

He recalls of his Wall Street experience, “I was around a whole host of very intelligent almost over aggressive folks. For a young banker, especially for a young African American banker, it gives you the opportunity to be in meetings and see the deals get crafted from the ground up, to see the personal interactions, to see the parts of a term sheet that are critical in negotiations and how to stick to a business plan or path.” He adds, “It’s just a very aggressive time. Excuses aren’t allowed”. But it is those experiences that have groomed Harvey for his leadership role today.

It is that training that leads Harvey and his team of bankers to strive for impeccable service. “You have to have it perfect and then be ready to do it perfect again the very next day,” he says. And it’s that mindset that he has brought with him from Wall Street and is now requiring of everyone at Broadway Federal Bank a group he like to refer too as “Team Broadway.”

Harvey says that Broadway Federal is not about individuals. What it is about, he says, is “Team Broadway” and the customers they represent. It is about what they as a banking institution can and will bring to the community. “I’m hopeful my concept of Team Broadway, will take us to the next level. My goal is to bring the best team of elite bankers I can assemble over here to Broadway, to join a core of existing solid bankers, and give the bank back to the community.”

Karen Slade, general manager of KJLH Radio in Los Angeles, said the station has partnered with Broadway Federal for years, and she has nothing but praise for the bank, its leadership, and its commitment to the community. “Glenn Harvey and his team at Broadway Federal Bank are a true asset to our community their professionalism and financial expertise coupled with their genuine commitment to our community has proven invaluable to KJLH over the years.”

With every move that Harvey makes and every seasoned banker he brings to Broadway Federal, he is raising the bar. He admits that it’s hard to ask seasoned professionals to leave mainstream to go to a startup or a revamp. So, there must be platforms in place within those communities for those people to come back to. Broadway Federal Bank is one such platform. Harvey sees coming home to Los Angeles and to Broadway Federal as a real chance to get back to where it all began. “Here is the unique opportunity for folks like myself who have been away for 20-25 years to come back,” he says. Since coming on board in 2006, Harvey has brought in an elite team of bankers into the operations at Broadway Federal. He has brought in a new First Vice President, Internal Auditor and Chief Compliance Officer Sam Sarpong; Wilbur McKesson now serves as Senior Vice President/Chief Loan Officer; and Senior Vice President/Chief Retail Banking Officer Candice Hurdle Noel. This new team of leadership at the bank brings a wealth of banking experience from such national banks as Citibank, Washington Mutual and Comerica Bank, but at the same time, they bring a dedication to the community which has been the hallmark of Broadway Federal since the Hudson Family started the bank years ago.

Not only does the bank have top- tier personnel and banking veterans overseeing its day to day transactions, but the bank’s Board of Directors includes some of top tier business professionals and community leaders as well. They include such veterans as Paul Hudson, Kellogg Chan, Robert Davidson Jr., Javier Leon, A. Odell Maddox, Rick McGill, Daniel Medina, Virgil Roberts and Elrick Williams.

“Glen is part of the new generation of leaders that is now moving our community to another level,” stated Eric Lee, executive director of Southern Christian Leadership Council of Greater Los Angeles. Lee also stated that “Harvey brings corporate training, philosophies and resources into our community, but he still has the passion and commitment to serve the community and our people. This is a combination that is very hard to beat.”

How does Harvey describe his brand of corporate banking mixed with community interest? He simply states, “I want Broadway Federal Bank to be described as good folks and elite-level bankers. I want to bring elite products and high-tech service but makes you feel like it’s home cooking. If you can wrap all those up, that’s what I’d like to provide.”

Broadway Federal Bank currently has four branch locations including an Exposition Park Branch, Midtown Branch, Inglewood Branch and Wilshire Branch-Corporate Offices with a Leimert Park Branch scheduled to open soon. For further information, visit
