Mothers of Many (MOM) CEO and Apple certified instructor, Daphne Bradford was chosen recently as one of Microsoft’s Innovative Educators for 2011. Bradford was selected out of 102 finalists to present and share her technology project, which gives youth a leg up on technology and digital media. She will participate in the 2011 Innovative Education Forum at Microsoft’s main campus in Redmond, WA, July 27-29.

“I did a project at Cal State Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) under my ‘Developing Digital Media Geniuses Program,’” said Bradford. This project helped to qualify Bradford as a finalist for Innovative Educator.

Many of the students in her digital media program attend Crenshaw High School. Bradford utilizes CSUDH campus’ brand new MAC lab to facilitate the classes. The lab is a part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for students 50-years-plus. “As a digital media instructor, I certify the kids in photography, moviemaking, [etc.].”

Bradford understands the importance of being informed for tomorrow. Her digital media program helps youth to become tech-savvy. “My students taught their elders how to use the digital media technology … how to make movies, how to do podcasting, photo albums,” said Bradford.

She continued, “It was the most amazing thing to see, and I knew they would be able to do it. I just didn’t have any idea they would be as successful.” Her class utilized Microsoft software to put together their lesson plans and agenda for their teaching projects.

“The goal of doing the program was to give them the opportunity to use the skills that they’ve learned, to prepare them for college and career,” said Bradford.  She hopes to continue her program in partnership with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, and plans on forming a digital media team for “Let’s Move High School” in the fall as part of a back-to-school event.

Last year, Bradford implemented President Obama’s agenda, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), adding digital media training to the classroom as part of her program. This also led to her digital media students visiting the White House.

Mother of Many is a non-profit organization that provides educational programming to various schools. The organization’s purpose is to expose students to a variety of careers and opportunities. Bradford teaches classes at Crenshaw, Dorsey and Hamilton high schools. MOM also has high-school graduates who are now MOM mentors; they attend California State universities at Dominguez Hills, Northridge, Los Angeles and Santa Monica College. As of last year, Bradford was made the official OFA-CA Photo Editor.
