The month of May is designated as “National Military Appreciation Month” in California and Nationally. The Crenshaw Workforce Services Office of the Employment Development Department (EDD) in Los Angeles is planning a “Veterans EXPO 2009” event on May 28, 2009, to recognize veterans for their contributions during peace and war as defenders of our country. The Veteran staff in our office have partnered with other community-based organizations, One-Stop Centers, and faith-based organizations to plan this event.
We will have speakers, exhibits, employers, and workshops to help recently separated and other veterans learn about opportunities to become employed through the companies and organizations receiving grants and other money from the President’s Economic Stimulus package. Working at the EDD office, our employees see firsthand the adverse impact the downturn in the economy has had on businesses, families and individuals in Los Angeles. They are motivated by the President’s vision and Congress’ actions, to provide funds for new technologies, create Green Jobs, reduce global warming, clean the environment, and improve healthcare and education through the Stimulus money. We want to help turn around the economy. The theme for all the work teams at the Crenshaw office is “SOS (Set off Stimulus) – Help is on the Way”.
We’ve invited Senator Barbara Boxer to come speak with our Veterans and provide them with first hand knowledge of the business, employment, and training opportunities included in the Stimulus Package for California. We want to revive the hope and expectations of our veteran’s for employment in the future. The event is 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Holman United Methodist Church, 3320 W. Adams Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90018.
