Compton Unified School District’s (CUSD) Board of Trustees and Superintendent Darin Brawley presented their special honors recently given by State Superintendent Tom Torlakson, Tuesday, April 9. During the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting, President Micah Ali shared a certificate of recognition for the Board and an honorary doctorate degree for Superintendent Brawley.  The certificates, presented by the California Department of Education in partnership with the California Middle Grades Alliance, recognized the Board and the Superintendent for their “leadership in providing policy, resources, and organizational support; for fostering positive and productive middle grades learning environments for students and staff; and for an enduring commitment to academic excellence and continued achievement at the district’s middle schools.”

On behalf of the District, President Micah Ali expressed gratitude for the honors given by State Superintendent Torlakson.

“Often times we fail to realize the intrinsic worth, benefit, and value of this school board. I believe we do tremendous work and it’s proper and fitting when you are recognized by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction,” he said.

“I’m extremely proud of this board, not only because of the District’s gains in academics.  I’m extremely appreciative of the Board for supporting the initiative that spawned an increase to ADA, which resulted in millions of dollars being received in order to fund academic enrichment.  I’m extremely humbled by the Board’s commitment to the Affordable Care Act in supporting initiatives that set forth the development of school-based health centers in this community.” President Ali also praised Superintendent Brawley for his leadership during the 2012-13 school year.

“I believe we definitely owe a debt of gratitude and appreciation to the Superintendent for hitting the ground running and bringing forward several innovative solutions to address the District’s fiscal woes, as well as bringing forth some great ideas as far as overhauling and revamping the processes within special education, and the overall structural organization.”

Brawley thanked State Superintendent Torlakson for bestowing the District with honors, especially his honorary doctorate degree.

“The Board and I are very grateful for the recognition we’ve received, and we believe it is a reflection of the many positive things occurring in Compton,” he said.

“Our students deserve nothing less than a school district that is working hard to give them the best education possible.  We are moving ahead with our goal of raising academic achievement, and reaching greater heights.  None of this is possible without the hard work of our children, who continue to make us proud every step of the way.”
