State Senator primed for likely runoff with Anna Cubas
Decorated State Senator and highly respected African American public servant, Curren Price separated himself as the leading Black candidate in the field for 9th District City Council with roughly 26.87 percent of the vote reported early Wednesday morning.
The highly anticipated race for the 9th District focused on Price and Assemblyman Mike Davis, but it was former city hall aide Ana Cubas who was trailing Price as the votes were being tabulated.
“Today our neighbors came together and decided they wanted new leadership,” Price said.
He told the many supporters and friends gathering at his campaign headquarters; “You know, looking at all of you tonight, I am again reminded that the 9th District’s biggest strength is its people.”
Cubas, the Latino Deputy Director of the Youth Policy Institute (YPI), and former appointee of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, trailed Price with 20.40 percent of the vote, but just shy of 50 percent of the precincts had reported.
Running a distant third was Davis with 15.55 percent of the vote just ahead of Terra Hara.
Price campaigned on his solid record of achievement on one of the most pressing issues facing Los Angeles: access to quality, affordable healthcare.
“Our 9th District communities are uniting behind this campaign, because the people in our neighborhoods understand the urgency as it relates to matters of health and wellness — particularly for our children, young families and elderly,” said Price. “It will take proven leadership to make the kind of change we need in the 9th District, and expanding access to healthcare is central to improving the quality of life in South Los Angeles.”
However, having represented a portion of the 9th District as a Senator for the 26th District since 2009, Price is more than qualified to address the needs and concerns of the constituency.
“There are so many people to thank, people who made it possible for us to be here today. My lovely wife, Del, thank you for everything. My beautiful mother, Charlene our campaign’s secret weapon. Dakira and Dennis, we love you,” Price added.
Price wanted to make sure that he did not miss any of his supporters; “We have to thank our friends at the los Angeles County Federations of Labor, and their fearless leader, Maria Elena Durazo. The great people at Unite Here. Laphonza butler and our friends at SEIU 721 and SEIU California. Danny Bakewell, thank you for your support. Pastor Iverson and Paradise Baptist Church, thank you so very much.
He pointed to; “The diversity in this room, and throughout the 9th, is our greatest asset. Some may have tried to divide us, but you showed all of Los Angeles what can be accomplished when all of our communities come together for a common purpose.”
