Local farmers market is open for the community to get the fresh produce it deserves.
“Rain or shine,” say officials of the Crenshaw Farmers Market, which takes place every Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on the Sears lower parking lot. From there, customers have access to fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies like, butternut squash, tomatoes, greens, pomegranates, persimmons, apples, farm fresh chickens, eggs, fresh fish and seafood salads. Vendors accept EBT and WIC, they said.
The Crenshaw Farmers’ Market, formerly the Leimert Park Village Farmers’ Market, features 12 farmers and 7 food vendors, according to officials, “who bring a diverse selection of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as spices, sprouts, breads, nuts, sweets and flowers each week.” The market also hosts monthly events including cooking demonstrations, tastings, contests, children’s activities and live entertainment.
The market is one of a variety of sustainability projects funded by the Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE LA). SEE LA is a private non-profit community development agency, “dedicated to improving the quality of life in the city of Los Angeles,” said the organization’s officials.
“The mission of Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) is to promote and engage in self-sustaining community and economic development activities within the city of Los Angeles, including sustainable food systems, social and cultural programs, and economic revitalization projects,” they said.
Other SEE LA markets include the Watts Healthy and the Hollywood farmers’ markets. They also head up the EBT/ food stamp project, “a countywide effort to promote the use of EBT cards at farmers’ markets,” officials explained, and the “Good Cooking” program.
“The Good Cooking Program is a six week cooking class series designed for the busy cooks of limited income families. Using fresh seasonal produce supplied by growers from the Farmers Market, each class demonstrates recipes that show how easy it is to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in family meals,” they said.
The Crenshaw Farmers’ Market is open year round and serves the communities of Angeles Mesa, Baldwin Hills, Crenshaw, Hyde Park, Leimert Park and View Park. The market is located at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza at 3650 Martin Luther King Jr. blvd, at Stocker St.
