Responding to community concerns and remaining committed to uplifting the impacted neighborhoods of the Ninth Council District, Councilmember Curren D. Price Jr. announced Wednesday a new community clean-up effort for the South Los Angeles area. The new targeted beautification plan was made possible by a reallocation of $400,000 in Community Development Block grant funding, which was approved by the City Council of Los Angeles Wednesday.

“Since taking office, the Council District Nine team has been working diligently to clean up our streets organizing community clean-ups and directing resources to clean up dozens of alleyways and neighborhood streets. Our efforts have built momentum – but our issue with trash and illegally dumped items continues to be a pervasive problem that impacts the quality of life of our residents and impedes our ability to spur economic development,” said Councilman Curren D. Price Jr.

“This is why I introduced this motion, to ensure that we have the resources we need to combat this issue and make a significant impact. I am also very excited to partner with a great community organization, the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, who will help us tackle this project and will also create new jobs for our un-employed youth in the community.”

Today’s Council action will appropriate $400,000 in CDBG funds from the Neighborhood Improvement Fund 2013-14. This federally-funded program was designed to service low-income communities of need. Council District Nine has the largest concentration of low-income residents of any district in the city, with a poverty rate of 36 percent. The clean-up efforts will include power washing, sweeping, bulky item pick-up and disposal, among other services.
