Congresswoman Richardson Instrumental in Securing an Additional $624 Million In Federal Funding for California High Speed Rail

Congresswoman Laura Richardson (D-CA37) expressed her gratification with the U.S. Department of Transportation redirecting $624 million in funding from Wisconsin and Ohio to California to the High Speed Rail system that is slated to begin construction in 2012.

Congresswoman Richardson, Founder and Co-Chair of California High Speed Rail Caucus, spearheaded a Congressional letter signed by 22 members of Congress urging the redistribution of funds to California after Wisconsin and Ohio altered their rail plans.

“After several states announced their intention to cancel their high -speed rail plans, I recognized this as an opportunity to concentrate our federal investment in a state that is both an ideal location for high speed-rail, has demonstrated its readiness by committing substantial State funds, and is eager to implement a high speed rail system,” explained Congresswoman Richardson.

Rep. Richardson added, “This is a further indication that our California project is on the right track and will create tens of thousands of jobs for our state. We are well on our way to constructing a high-speed rail system that will provide greater transportation mobility, increase intermodal connections, decrease congestion, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, while serving as a catalyst for smart-growth development at stations.”

The additional Recovery Act funding was redistributed after nearly $1.2 billion was returned from Wisconsin and Ohio. California’s project has received the most federal funding of any state in the nation, totaling more than $3.2 billion.

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security and is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
