Congresswoman Richardson Announces Two Department of Transportation Grants Designed to Create Jobs in the 37th District

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced the 37th District will benefit from two U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) grants, totaling $485,629, focused on providing training, support services and job placement help for communities with high unemployment rates.

“These two grants are important in that they will do more than just provide valuable job training in the construction field, but they also include a retention assistance component, which will teach people the skills and understanding to excel in their jobs once they have them,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “With the unemployment rate in the 37th District at more than 20 percent in some areas, the programs these grants will fund are a step toward economic recovery for both the individuals they help and the communities where they live.”

Long Beach’s Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network is receiving a $230,789 grant, which it will use to provide outreach and recruitment, orientation, assessment, construction-related training, on-the-job training, intensive placement activities, support services and job retention assistance in highway planning and construction projects. The second grant is for $254,840 and has been awarded to the United Job Creation Council’s Reentry Construction Employment Project, which helps to provide highway construction industry skills training, tools and equipment to minorities, women and the disadvantaged.

“These two awards are a signal of hope and offer people in the District a much wanted opportunity to learn valuable skills so they have the means to take care of their families and to contribute to the improvement of their neighborhoods,” Congresswoman Richardson added.

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security and is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness, and Response. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
