Congresswoman Richardson Announces “Don’t Panic…Prepare”

Today Congresswoman Laura Richardson attended a Joint Democratic / Republican Caucus for a briefing on the 2009 H1-N1 Virus (formally known as the “Swine Flu”). 


Congresswoman Richardson said, “The facts are these:


       United States has been preparing via financial investment, training exercises and partnerships since September 11, 2001; 

       There are currently 91 cases in the 10 States;

       The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has begun dispersing strategic national stockpile of medicine and anticipates completion by May 3rd;

       48 States are participating on daily update calls;

       The Unites States is working in a cross-functional basis

o   Land, Sea and Air

o   Local, State and Federal

o   Tri-National:  U.S., Mexico and Canada


The message today by Secretaries Napolitano and Sebelius, as well as CDC Acting Director Dr. Besser is that the “United States has 50 million vaccine stockpile and vaccines for the 2009 H1-N1 is being developed as we speak and finally everyday at 11:00AM the CDC will update everyone with additional information,” Richardson stated. 


Lastly, Congresswoman Richardson said, “Preparation should be done now.  Devise options of school and childcare closures prior to last minute alerts.”  For daily updates after 11:00AM go to www.cdc.gov.
