Tony Austin, scholarship recipient
The school year of 2010-2011 for some graduates has already ended and by the end of June many high school graduates will be looking forward to college. One very special young man is looking forward to going out of state to Sterling University in Kansas where he wants to major in Criminal Justice. His name is Tony Austin, who is the proud recipient of the Arthur Jay LeVias Presidential Scholarship. Tony a graduate of Compton High School participated in this scholarship program from March to June of 2011 along with 18 other young African American males.
As an alumni, Mr. LeVias introduced his scholarship program to encourage young men to first dress professionally, to speak and act respectfully toward their teachers and peers, to write an essay of substances and to maintain a high level of self respect.
For the first four weeks of the program Mr. LeVias awarded three young men $100.00 at the end of each week. During the month of April, three young men were awarded $100.00 for that month. To the young man who was most presidential, demonstrated determination and excellence and was most consistent in maintaining a high level of self respect, he received the ultimate scholarship of one-thousand dollars in June. So on June 3, 2011 that award of $1000.00 was presented to Mr. Tony Austin by the donor, Mr. Arthur Jay LeVias.
Tony was asked if it was difficult for him to continue with this program throughout the year, and he replied that it was no problem; I liked all the compliments I received from my teachers and counselors as well as my peers.
It made me feel like I truly was somebody. I took this program very seriously, because for the first time I knew what a real man was suppose to look like and I am very grateful to Mr. LeVias for caring enough about us as African American males to invest in us like he did. Even when some of us did not have shirts or ties to began the program, Mr. LeVias bought over a dozen shirts and ties to help us get started, and that even encouraged some of the counselors to also contribute clothing for some us to participate in The Arthur Jay LeVias Presidential Scholarship Program.
Mr. Tony Austin was very excited about being the first recipient of the $1000.00 Arthur Jay LeVias Presidential Award, and Mr. LeVias was very pleased that this young man was the recipient. Mr. LeVias stated, “it proves what one can produce if you care enough to give back to your community.”
