Nearly 100 Los Angeles-area ministers and civic leaders came out last month to support the efforts of A.M.E. University in Monrovia, Liberia.

The Ecumenical & Community Breakfast, hosted by retired A.M.E. Bishop C. Garnett Henning, Sr., was held at First A.M.E. Church (FAME) in Los Angeles.

The event also featured a salute to Nelson Mandela, an update on the University by Bishop Clement W. Fugh of the A.M.E. 14th Episcopal District and a presentation by A.M.E. University President Joseph T. Isaac.

Bishop Henning established the institution in 1995 while serving as presiding prelate over several African countries including Liberia. The school’s enrollment exceeds 3,000 students with hundreds more on the waiting list.

“AME University is truly ‘A Miracle in Monrovia,’ one which we can embrace and support as a living legacy to Nelson Mandela,” said Bishop Henning as he outlined donation opportunities to the audience.  Contributions will go to tuition fees, books, faculty salaries, and operating expenses.  Also, attendees were invited to donate iPads or serve as a visiting lecturer.

“The young people of Liberia remain eager to advance their lives beyond all odds, and to make a positive difference, in the lives of their families, neighborhoods, villages, country and the continent of Africa,” he noted.

In response to the pledges and contributions from the audience, “It is indeed a blessing to know that the students, faculty, programs and development of facilities at A.M.E. U will be able to count on support from the Los Angeles-area,” added Bishop Henning.
